Context

A German manufacturer of sensor systems ships its devices to customer sites around the world — retail spaces counting visitors, logistics terminals measuring material flows. Every sensor produces a continuous stream of operational data.

Once installed, a device is effectively out of reach: behind the customer's firewall, on someone else's network, often in another country.

Challenge

Diagnostics meant travelling. Device data sat isolated on local installations: no central view of the fleet, no secure remote access, and every firmware issue or support case turned into an on-site visit or an improvised remote session. With an installed base in the thousands, that stopped scaling.

The data stream itself held an unbuilt product, too: customers wanted dashboards and reports on what their sensors were seeing — something the hardware alone could never deliver.

What we built

We designed and built the analytics cloud around a simple contract: every sensor streams its events to an ingestion API, queued jobs process and pre-aggregate the data, and customers see live dashboards instead of raw payloads — engineered for throughput, reliability and data integrity.

On that foundation sit the products: configurable dashboards with shareable widgets and scheduled PDF reports by email, a report builder for ad-hoc analysis, and a permission hierarchy from client down to location and sensor — with roles, signed invitations and two-factor authentication.

Around the platform we delivered the rest of the operation: an OpenVPN-based fleet-management portal giving engineers secure, traceable remote access to any device in the field, a second analytics cloud for the company's industrial product line, and a mobile app that puts live device status in the service team's pocket. The latest iteration adds an AI layer that reads each chart and writes the interpretation — headline, key findings, trend — in the user's language.

01

Ingestion & processing

From sensor event to insight: an HTTP ingestion API, queued processing and pre-aggregated data pools that keep year-over-year queries fast at fleet scale.

02

Dashboards & scheduled reports

Widget dashboards with seven evaluation types, sharing between users, and PDF snapshots delivered by email on a schedule.

03

AI-written insights

A language-model layer interprets each chart and writes headline, key findings and trend — in German or English.

04

Multi-tenant access control

A client → location → sensor hierarchy with fine-grained roles, signed invitations and two-factor authentication.

05

VPN fleet management

An OpenVPN portal for secure, audited remote access to every device in the field — diagnostics without the site visit.

06

Exports & migration

A report builder with Excel and PDF export, plus a converter that moved years of legacy cloud data into the new platform.

Outcome

Support shifted from site visits to remote diagnostics, and customers gained live visibility into their installations — dashboards, reports and alerts on top of hardware they already owned.

The platform became part of the product itself: a sellable analytics offering that ships with every sensor, and a foundation the manufacturer keeps building on today.
